- thick tough yellowish-tan cracked skin
- interior gleba is initially HARD and DARK PURPLE-BLACK. Sandy soils, mossy banks near Eucalyptus and pines (2000-6000 ft). Islands: Hawaii Island (Volcano/Waimea), Maui, Oahu. Fall and winter
- cool mist-heavy upland conditions. Local name: Earthball. CRITICAL LOOKALIKE: Edible puffballs (Calvatia, Lycoperdon) are PURE SOLID WHITE inside — any purple or dark interior means TOXIC Scleroderma.
Symptoms & Toxicity
