Key Identification Features
- Brown cap (3–10 cm), pores large and irregular (angular, maze-like — almost tooth-like), hollow stem, ring present initially, strictly associated with western larch (Larix occidentalis). Found only where larch grows in RM (MT, ID). The hollow stem and larch association are diagnostic.
Preparation Notes
Good edible; peel cap if desired. The hollow stem and larch mycorrhizal association make ID straightforward in larch forests.
