- PURE SOLID WHITE inside when young. Hawaii Island, Maui, Oahu. Non-toxic when pure white inside. CRITICAL: Always slice open — any purple, black, or dark coloration = TOXIC Scleroderma (Pigskin Poison Puffball), NOT this species.

Edible when young and pure white inside. Slice open before eating — pure white = safe; any dark color = discard immediately (toxic Scleroderma). Sauté in butter when fresh.
