- Cap 8–20 cm, bright red to orange-red with white wart-like patches. Gills white, free. Ring on upper stem. Bulbous base in remnant volva. White spore print. Grows near birch, pine, spruce. Distinctive and iconic — most recognizable toxic mushroom.
Symptoms & Toxicity
Onset 30 min–2 hr: confusion, disorientation, hallucinations (dreamlike), ataxia, hypersalivation. Severe: myoclonic jerking, seizures, coma — typically resolves within 12–24 hr. Contains ibotenic acid and muscimol; NOT a cholinergic toxidrome.
