- thick white stem with large skirt-like ring and a prominent white cup (volva) at base

- mild pleasant aroma. Emerges from a white egg enclosed in the volva. Found under coast live oak and tan oak in coastal CA. EXPERT ID REQUIRED — closely resembles deadly Amanita species.
Preparation Notes
Highly prized CA edible, particularly in Italian-American communities. Cook thoroughly. Sauté, roast, or use in risotto. NEVER eat raw. Collect only when volva is clearly visible and cap fully separated from it.
