Key Identification Features
- Hollow cap and stem (cut to verify), honeycomb-pitted cap with dark ridges and lighter pits attached to stem at base, entirely hollow interior when sliced vertically. Cap ridges darken with age. Grows under conifers and in burn areas. CRITICAL: distinguish from toxic False Morel (Gyromitra) which has brain-like wrinkled cap, cottony interior.
Preparation Notes
Must cook thoroughly — toxic raw. Outstanding edible. Sauté in butter, dry well. Appears in spring and post-fire environments.
